Yan Yi is a regular volunteer with TOUCH Young Arrows (TYA). Her main scope includes giving tuition to the less fortunate kids and run Values Driven Activities (VDA) . We also have camps during school holidays, which are planned by volunteers. We invited her to share her thoughts and experiences with volunteering at TYA
“Why did you decide to join TYA?”
I decided to join TYA because I find that children are an exceptionally vulnerable community. They are vulnerable to physically and even emotionally harms, and yet may not have the means to speak up for them. Furthermore, being less fortunate makes them more susceptible than others, and also less likely to seek help and have the necessary resources to tackle them.
“What do you enjoy about your experience at TYA?”
I find our weekly sessions very enjoyable because the kids share with us their problems and tell us all about their daily lives. It’s the simple act of being their listening ear and being their outlet for all the things that they may be going through that empowers me. It may be tiring at times, but when we hear a simple “thank you teacher” from the kids, it just makes my day. Knowing that they’re appreciative for what we have done really keep me going and brings me back every week with the anticipation of hearing about their experiences in life.
